Amerikan Füze Savunma Kurumu tarafından Kaliforniya’daki Edwards Hava Üssü’nde yapılan son yer denemelerinde, lazer ışını demeti uçaktan hedefine saatte bir milyar km hızla hedefini vurdu.

1,6 milyar dolar tutarındaki projede Amerikan Northrop Grumman Space Technology şirketince geliştirilen yüksek enerjili “kimyasal oksijen-iyodin lazeri” Boeing 747 jumbo jetin burnuna yerleştirilen yaklaşık 6 ton ağırlığındaki taretten ateşlendi.

Şimdiye kadar göz ameliyatlarında ya da kara tahtada istenilen bir şeyi göstermek için kullanılan lazer, bundan böyle güçlü bir silah haline dönüştürülerek, balistik füze tehdidini ortadan kaldırmayı amaçlanıyor.

Projeye göre, keşif uydusundan yerden havaya balistik füze fırlatıldığı bilgisini alan ABL ile donatılmış uçak, önce füzenin menzilini saptamak, ardından da füzenin özelliğini ve boyutlarını belirleyebilmek için birer zayıf lazer ışını gönderiyor.

Bundan sonra uçağın içinde 6 adet minibüs büyüklüğündeki modülün sağladığı yüksek güçlü lazer demetiyle balistik füze 2-3 saniye içinde havada imha ediliyor.
